Εnvironment and Sustainability Training Centers (K.E.P.E.A.) are a continuation of the Environmental Education Centers (K.P.E.), which were established by the Ministry of Education back in 1993 to link education with sustainability and the environment. The Soufli K.P.E. is one of the first seven centers opened in 1995, beginning its operation in 1996. This initiative is part of a broader European and global approach to the ecological crisis, emphasizing the need to educate both the younger generation and adult citizens appropriately. In 2018, the Environmental Education Centers were transformed into Centers for Sustainability Education (K.E.A.), and in 2021 they were renamed K.E.P.E.A., retaining the same exact responsibilities.
In Greece, these Centers aim to promote Environmental and Sustainability Education within the educational system and in local communities. They cater to all educational levels and can host student groups from schools across the country for participation in single-day or multi-day programs. During these programs, activities are conducted on topics related to sustainable development, such as poverty, peace, climate change, gender equality, biodiversity, etc., using modern teaching methods aligned with the principles of experiential learning and initiative-taking. Meanwhile, in the European Union, these centers took on a different format, functioning more as Natural Science Centers with green classrooms, centers in parks, school farms, science museums, botanical gardens, and more.
Today, the educational team at K.E.P.E.A. Soufli consists of three members, teachers from both primary and secondary education, compared to the past when the teams were five- or six-membered.
After over 30 years of expertise and operation of K.P.E. in our country, it is considered essential to capitalize on and disseminate the acquired experience to both schools and the general public. By spreading the values of Environmental Education through K.E.P.E.A., it is hoped that corresponding sensitivity and the necessary tools will be imparted to students, who as adults will design a better and more ecological future for humanity
